Apokalypsis (2025)

24’, for brass band

Apokalypsis, the Greek word for Doomsday or Revelation, is a musical representation of our contrasting perspectives of the end of the world. Known in Abrahamic religions as the final Judgement, or in various cultural settings as the Apocalypse, communities around the world have different beliefs and understandings of the final days of humanity. This work follows a long line of musical works that examine the last Judgement, like Philip Wilby’s Revelation, Edward Gregson’s The Trumpets of the Angels, and several Requiem masses, to which this work pays tribute.

The dark intro of Part One introduces the main motif of the work building to large towering chords, before a brisk rondo emerges in Part Two, representing different peoples and their varying beliefs about the last days.

Part Three begins with cadenzas reflecting on death, grief and the afterlife: solemnity at the last stages of the world as we know it, but also an understanding of liberation and jubilation, conveying the beauty of life everlasting through an elegy given by the solo cornet.

Finally, Part Four pays homage to religious iconography featuring antiphonal cornets building to a dramatic close.
