Chorale (2019)

Featuring musicians from the NZ School of Music Orchestra, Wellington Brass, Royal NZ Air Force Band, NZ School of Music Big Band, Nelson City Brass and friends. Joint winner of the 2019 Lilburn Trust NZ School of Music Composers' Competition.

This piece developed as the merging of several compositional concepts I wanted to explore, from aleatoricism (or free music) to musical explorations of spaces to ‘super instruments’ made up of many performers. What ties these together, however, is a reflection on my relationship with brass instruments spanning the last ten years; this piece is a mosaic made up of all of the different facets of music brass banding has introduced me to, played by a multitude of great musicians I’ve met because of these different facets.
